AI visibility FAQ for doctors and practice owners
The questions worth asking.
No mystery process. No promise that one page edit puts you at the top of every answer. Here is how medical practices get recommended by AI across their service area, what it costs, how we measure results, and who we work with.
AI visibility basics
What is AI visibility for a medical practice?
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity name your practice when patients ask about the treatments you offer. It covers whether you appear, how you are described, and which sources the answer relies on. The work makes your practice easier for those systems to find, understand, and trust.
Isn’t this just SEO with a new name?
Not quite, and we do both. SEO and AI visibility share foundations: clear treatment pages, sound technical setup, local relevance, accurate listings, and authority. The unit of measurement is different. SEO tracks how a page ranks for a search query. AI visibility tracks whether the practice is named in a composed answer, how it is described, and what sources support that choice. A practice can rank well in search and still be absent, or misrepresented, in an AI answer. That is why we handle medical SEO and AI visibility together and report them side by side.
What is AI search optimization for healthcare?
It is the work of making a medical practice easy for AI search tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity to find, verify and recommend. Because health questions get extra scrutiny, the work centers on evidence those tools can check: a clear page for each treatment, clinician credentials, accurate locations and service area, consistent listings, and credible outside mentions. We call it AI visibility, and we test it against the questions patients ask across your whole service area.
Does AI visibility replace my SEO or website work?
No. AI visibility builds on good SEO rather than replacing it, and many of the same assets matter: clear service pages, accurate listings, reviews, and credible mentions. We can handle SEO and AI visibility together, or, if someone already handles your SEO or website, the AI visibility work fits alongside theirs.
How do I get my practice recommended by ChatGPT?
There is no form to submit and no way to pay to be named inside the answer. ChatGPT names practices it can connect to a specific treatment and place using sources it trusts. Make that easy: let AI search crawlers reach your site, publish a clear page for each priority treatment, show your clinicians’ credentials, keep your listings identical everywhere, earn real reviews and outside mentions, and test the questions patients ask across your service area. Our step-by-step guide covers each step.
Which AI assistants do you test?
The ones patients are most likely to use: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity, plus others such as Microsoft Copilot when they matter for your market. Every result is logged with the assistant, the model where it is shown, the prompt, the location context, and the test date, so changes can be compared over time.
Can you help us show up in surrounding towns, not just our own?
Yes. That is a core part of the work. Patients will often travel for the right specialist, and they ask AI for the best option, not only the nearest one. We test prompts for the towns and areas you actually draw patients from, then build the evidence that connects your treatments to that wider region, for one location or many.
Cost, timeline and results
How much does AI visibility cost?
It depends on scope, so we price after we understand your practice instead of selling a fixed package. The main factors are how many treatments, locations, and towns you want covered, how much work your website and listings need, and how often you want retesting. You see the scope and the price before any paid work starts. If you want a smaller first step, we also offer a free report on one treatment.
How long until my practice shows up?
Plan in months, not days. Straightforward corrections can become visible after a site or profile is recrawled; new content, stronger third-party evidence, and consistent recommendation patterns take longer. We report the leading indicators first—cleaner entity recognition, better source coverage, fewer factual errors—then the recommendation trend. Anyone offering an exact date is pretending the models are under their control.
How do you measure something that changes from one answer to the next?
With a controlled prompt set, not a single screenshot. We repeat the same treatment and location questions, record the model and test date, capture which practices appear, note recommendation order, inspect cited sources, and flag factual errors. The useful signal is the pattern across repeated runs: share of answers, citation rate, accuracy, and movement against the original baseline.
What will your reports show me?
A plain scorecard for the prompts we agreed on: how often your practice appears, where it sits in the recommendation, whether the answer cites a source and which one, factual errors about your practice, which competitors appear instead, and how each number has moved since the baseline. Each report also lists what we changed and what we plan to do next.
Can you guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No. The answer changes with the wording, model, location context, and sources available at that moment. We can control the quality and consistency of your public evidence, test it rigorously, and show what changed. We cannot buy or lock a permanent recommendation.
Getting started
What do you need from the practice to start?
The treatments you want to be known for, the towns and areas you draw patients from, your website, locations, clinician details, and access to whoever can approve factual changes. From there we map the prompts, test where you stand, and propose a scope. If you would rather start smaller, the free report needs only one website and one treatment.
What does the free AI visibility report include?
You send your website and one priority treatment. We test a focused set of patient prompts for that treatment and return a baseline: where your practice appears, who appears instead, any citations the AI provides, and verifiable gaps in your public evidence. Uncited answers are marked as source-untraceable. The report is free and there is no obligation. See what the free report includes and what to send.
What happens after the free report?
We walk you through the findings and the gaps that matter most. If it makes sense to keep going, we propose a scope: the treatments, locations, and towns to target, how often we retest, and the price. If not, you keep the report and can act on it yourself or with your current team.
Do you only work with practices in the Chicago area?
No. Patient Engine is based in the Chicagoland area and meets practices across the region in person; see AI visibility and SEO for Chicagoland practices. We also work with medical practices elsewhere in the US remotely. Either way, we work only with medical practices.
Do I need a new website?
Usually not. Most of the work is making what you already have clearer and more consistent: specific treatment pages, clinician details, location and service-area information, structured data, and accurate listings elsewhere on the web. If an important page is missing, we will tell you and can work with whoever manages your site.
Do you need access to patient records?
No. AI visibility work uses public information about your practice, such as your website, listings, and published mentions. We do not need patient records or health information for it. Patient reactivation is different because it involves contacting your existing patients, so it is set up around your practice’s own systems, policies, and approvals.
Specialties and reactivation
Which specialties do you work with?
AI visibility fits practices where patients research a treatment before they book and may travel for the right provider. We have a dedicated focus on interventional radiology and vascular clinics, and the same approach applies to other specialist and elective-care practices, independent or multi-location. If you are unsure whether it fits your specialty, ask us.
Do you work with IR and vascular clinics?
Yes. Interventional radiology and vascular clinics are a focus. Patients ask AI assistants about procedures such as uterine fibroid embolization, prostate artery embolization, PAD treatment, and varicose vein treatment, and may not know which kind of specialist performs them. We help your clinic get named, and described accurately, for those questions across your region. Read more about AI visibility for IR and vascular clinics.
Does patient reactivation depend on the AI visibility work?
No. It is a separate service for practices with dormant patients or uncontacted leads. We segment the audience, shape the offer, write the email and text sequence, coordinate approvals, and run the outreach around the practice’s systems and policies.
Get recommended across your whole service area.
When a patient anywhere in the area you serve asks ChatGPT, Google AI or another AI assistant which practice to see, yours should be part of the answer. We build the evidence AI assistants rely on, for the treatments you want to be known for, and retest until it holds.
